Summer is prime time for enjoying your water feature. You’ve survived the Midwest’s unpredictable weather and can revel in the sights and sounds of your pond.

Just a few precautions will keep your pond in tip-top shape for a few more months before colder temps set in. Good Earth Water Gardens suggests this late-summer checklist to keep your pond looking its best as the seasons change.

Check your water levels

Lucky for us, we’ve had quite a bit of rain. Your water levels are most likely just fine. But if you find that your pond is a little low, top it off with excess rain water about once a week. You can also use tap water if you pair it with a decholorinator / detoxifier. This will remove chlorine and other chemicals and protect your fish. Here’s how it works.

Feed your fish

Make sure your finned friends have enough to eat, but don’t overdo it. Feed no more than the fish will eat in about five minutes. Head out to your koi pond to feed one to three times a day.

Clear decaying vegetation

As plants rot, they can impact not only the appearance of your pond, but also the water quality. Decaying material can increase the nitrogen levels in your pond. It can also create a smelly layer of sediment at the bottom. It pays to remove dead or dying foliage regularly.

Add more plants

Believe it or not, late summer is a great time to introduce new plants to your aquascape. They’ll have plenty of time to get established before winter. And if you stay on top of removing yellowed and spent plants, you’ll have room for new vegetation.

Most importantly, take the time to enjoy your pond. These unique water features can enhance your yard and your quality of life.

And if you need a helping hand to maintain your pond or make it shine? Good Earth Water Gardens is delighted to help. Give us a call today at 913-749-8090, or contact us online. We look forward to hearing from you!
