No matter your passion, there are folks who share it. Kansas City is home to many organizations focused on gardening and plants. Joining one of these groups is a great way to learn more about what interests you and connect with like-minded people.
All of these organizations have their own focus and activities. But you’ll often find informative meetings, educational field trips, and plant sales. Here are just some of the gardening and plant groups in the Kansas City area:
Gardeners Connect – This community helps Kansas City-area gardeners improve their craft. It builds camaraderie and skills among members while also helping beautify public spaces. A speaker series and special events make this group unique.
Greater Kansas City Dahlia Society – If you’re interested in these big, glorious flowers, this group is for you. Events include regular meetings and an annual tuber sale.
Greater Kansas City Iris Society – This 70-year-old nonprofit is dedicated to the propagation and hybridization of irises. The group offers educational programs, volunteer opportunities at public gardens, and help for youth groups doing community beautification projects.
Heartland Peony Society – This group promotes peonies and encourages the development of new and improved varieties. It offers educational programs, and the website has an informative FAQ section.
Heartland Hosta & Shade Plant Society – If you’re a hosta-holic, this is the group for you! It hosts spring and fall meetings with exceptional speakers. The group also has an annual plant sale that benefits nonprofits like Operation Breakthrough and the Ronald McDonald House.
Kansas City Cactus and Succulent Society – With a 40-year history, this group has a wealth of knowledge on how to grow these plants in the less-than-ideal Midwest climate. It hosts a judged show and plant sale, as well as hands-on workshops and informative presentations.
Kansas City Rose Society – This organization is the steward of the Laura Conyers Smith Municipal Rose Garden in Loose Park. The group offers training in how to care for roses and hosts an annual rose show. It also hosts cultural events like readings and music in the garden.
Orchid Society of Greater Kansas City – Growers at all levels are welcome at this group’s monthly meetings. The society offers guest speakers, shows, sales, auctions, and tours. And each meeting includes show and tell, where members bring plants for judging.
