Water Feature Lighting

Lights are often an afterthought when people are planning their water features. But the right lighting can help you maximize your pond, fountain, or pondless waterfall.

How Lighting Helps Your Water Feature

In the daylight, strategic lighting can highlight the movement and character of your water feature. As you can see with this stunning waterfall, small spotlights enhance the color of the rocks and the movement of the water.

Lighting can also help you enjoy your water feature no matter the time of day. As the days grow shorter, many people are depending more and more upon the lighting around their ponds and fountains. These spillway bowls would be almost invisible without gentle spotlights that have a spectacular affect.
You can also completely transform a water feature with dramatic colored lights. This trifecta of fountains outside the Good Earth Water Gardens headquarters leaves no doubt of our loyalty to the Kansas City Chiefs!  All of these affects can enhance your enjoyment of your water feature – and they aren’t difficult to achieve.

Pond Lighting & Landscape LED Lights

Whether you’re designing a new water feature or want to add lights to an existing one, there are a few things to consider.  You need the right tools for the job. At Good Earth Water Gardens, we use LED lights instead of traditional incandescent fixtures. LEDs use about 80 to 90% less electricity than halogen lights, and they last 10 times longer. This longevity is important since effective water feature lighting can be difficult to access for maintenance. You’ll also need more lights that you might think. Light dissipates in water, so a warm glow requires more than a single bulb. It all depends on your specific water feature and your lighting design.

Outdoor Lighting Design

Call us biased, but we think outdoor lighting is a job for a professional. Lights that aren’t properly sealed and connected can allow moisture into the lines, which causes the lighting wire to corrode. That means you’ll need to redo your lights sooner rather than later. We’ve also seen too many misplaced, wrong-sized lights to think it’s a job that most people can do well. Instead, we’re fans of incorporating lighting design into the original plans for a pond, waterfall or fountain. But even if you’re adding lighting to an existing water feature, it can be carefully planned to enhance your enjoyment and highlight what makes your space special. The right lighting plan for you might mean underwater lights to focus on a waterfall. Or spotlights might make plants and other features pop. The goal is to make the most of your outdoor area and create beautiful vantage points from where you most often view your water feature. There’s no one-size-fits-all lighting plan – it must be specifically created for your needs and your space.
