Do you have a space in your garden beds that seems to be missing something? You’ve tried plants, flowers pots, statues, but you just can’t seem to get the right look? A low-maintenance fountain may be the answer!
Install a Fountain for Just a Few Hundred Dollars
Fountain benefits
There are a lot of perks to incorporating a fountain into your landscape:
- A fountain provides the subtle sights and sounds of running water.
- It’s a unique accent or focal point and more interesting than a flower pot or an ornamental shrub.
- A water feature provides hydration for wildlife like birds and squirrels.
- If you’re a DIYer, fountains are relatively easy to install and inexpensive.
Fountain considerations
Small fountains are generally pretty carefree. However, you do need to be prepared for three to-do items:
- Maintenance: It’s not unusual for a fountain to have algae. We recommend a natural beneficial bacteria and enzyme formula which helps create a more balanced ecology in the fountain. It may require a little patience to let it establish. We’ve also noticed that sometimes a fountain contains fewer algae after it operates for a season. If you use an algaecide, make sure it’s safe for pets and animals. We don’t recommend using chlorine tablets – they’re toxic and can damage the gaskets inside the pump.
- Cleaning: Keep an eye out for leaves and debris. Don’t let this gunk accumulate and decompose on your fountain. That can cause algae blooms and introduce sediments that can clog the pump. If the pump ever does get clogged, simply remove it from the reservoir. Spray it with the hose and you should be set.
- Winterizing: It’s not impossible to keep water running all winter. However, we highly recommend winterizing a small fountain when temps start consistently dropping below freezing. When that happens, pull the pump out of the reservoir. Store it in a bucket of water in an area that won’t freeze, like a garage or a basement.
And … that’s about everything that needs to be on your radar. A small fountain gives you a big return on a small investment of time.
