Fish can add an exciting dimension to your pond. But much like plants, not all fish do well in all kinds of weather. It’s important to find aquatic life that will thrive in your climate.

In Kansas City, we’ve found several species of fish that flourish. Here are some fish you should check out.

Japanese koi

These are the classic water garden fish. Their unique coloring can include white, black, red, yellow, blue, and cream. These exotic fish are beautiful – but be careful. Koi are members of the carp family and they love to eat – so they can destroy pond plants. When you’re selecting fish, plan on one full-grown koi for every 100 gallons of water.

Shubunkins

These goldfish have a distinctive pattern, a calico of orange, brown, and red. Shubunkins are a little easier to care for than Japanese koi. They’re more economical, too. These fish can reach up to 18 inches in adulthood.

Orandas

You can easily identify these goldfish thanks to the bubbly hoods on their heads. These hoods – called wen – can be a prominent growth on the top of the head, or they can encase the entire head except the eyes and mouth.

Sarasa Comets

These gorgeous red and white colored fish have long, flowing fins. If you’re looking for a hearty fish, this is it. Sarasa comets have slender bodies and a straight tail fin. No two fish have the same markings, and some can grow to as large as 14 inches long.

Comets

Also known as comet goldfish, these fish are usually redder than common goldfish. They live a long time and are pretty low maintenance. Comets usually get to be between four and 12 inches, and their size depends on the size of the pond. A good rule of thumb is 10 gallons of water per three to four inches of fish.

Several nurseries and shops in Kansas City carry fish that thrive in Midwest ponds. The Water Garden Society of Greater Kansas City is also a great resource for information. They occasionally distribute rescued fish and plants, too.
